Samza Round-Up - 1/12/2023

This Week's Round-Up

Onwards and upwards, as they say. I hope the New Year's Resolution season was productive and illuminating to you. The most creative resolution I heard this year was someone resolving to go deep sea diving. That wasn't me, I promise...

The most practical resolution? Spending 2-3 hours each week with the people/person closest to you making a memory each week. Doesn't have to be a massive event or dollar commitment every time, just something to break the monotony of each passing week and "mark" the time (think rollerblading, curling, hiking, murder mystery party, cribbage marathon, etc.). I will be implementing this to the best of my ability this year.

Go chase those goals and memories this year!

This week's newsletter is sponsored by Rakuten. Rakuten is a simple Chrome extension that gives you cash back for your online purchases with over 3,500 online stores, including retailers like Target, Wal-Mart, and Best Buy! The '2023 Recession': Why So Certain? (+3 Dividend Buys)

It's good to be skeptical. I've continued to notice that it seems like everyone around me at work (regional bank) and on the news are screaming that a recession is coming. Here's the problem: historically, recessions often appear out of nowhere, with little to no warning. It normally feels quite different from what we're currently experiencing (eccentric billionaires telling the small man that the "recession" is coming, advising him to hunker down and not spend big money).

This article is an interesting read: highly technical and well-researched in regards to stats about the current economy. I also appreciate the three stock picks at the end of the piece. Sometimes "stock picks" are simply cheap content, but this author defends his picks well.

The thesis of this article is extremely important to you and I. Think about it: if a recession isn't inevitable, that could change financials habits for hundreds of thousands or millions of Americans, and change the trajectory for the economic future of this nation. Be cautious in 2023 when it comes to financial management, but don't stop living from fear of the coming black cloud of the RECESSION.

LISTEN: Peter Zeihan - The Joe Rogan Experience

I won't be recommending podcast episodes every week anymore, but every time I stumble across an interesting one, I'll pass it along.

Peter Zeihan is a geopolitical strategist that I have subscribed to for a few months. He appeared on Joe Rogan this week, and dove into all of the most relevant news stories on the minds of the average American this week (China, Russia/Ukraine, American energy, etc.). Absolutely fascinating discussion if you set aside the time (2-hour episode) to listen to it. Highly recommend!

A Glimpse Into My World

I wrote a master thread of all the business projects I worked on in 2022 and the new things I'm exploring. These include

  1. Amazon store

  2. Land flipping

  3. Service business bookkeeping

  4. Freelance copywriting

  5. Home cleaning company

I've linked that resource below. Check it out!

This year, I have a simple goal: quit my day job. This will be accomplished through a combination of a few different income sources (namely, the ones above). I'll provide brief, weekly updates on my progress in these emails, but will be "live-tweeting" the entire journey throughout the months to come, if you're interested in following along.

I'll also be preparing an individual email on each side hustle this month to provide some background for all of you.

Here's to the journey!
