This Week's Round-Up
I hope everyone had a long, relaxing, and rewarding Thanksgiving weekend. Mine was full of family, football, and decorating (yes, I've been sucked into supporting the whole "Christmas season starts the day after Thanksgiving" thing). Now on to December.
9 Billionaires Who Say a Recession Is Imminent
I'm not sure about you, but I've been noticing a lot of incredibly wealthy individuals recently talking about the "upcoming recession," giving a heads-up to consumers like us that we should hold off on discretionary spending in the Holiday season. This strikes me as odd, especially given that there was no record of any of these people saying something like this in 2008, or any other recession in recent memory.
Are they doing it out of the goodness of their hearts?
Is it that the next recession is so obvious that it would detrimental for them not to bring attention to it? Maybe it's simply that these people just didn't see '08 or the .com bubble burst coming, but it strikes me as odd nonetheless.
Are they trying to force a recession as they stockpile cash to buy up more assets for themselves? Time will tell...
Clashes in Shanghai as COVID protests flare across China
I know, I know; these first two headlines have nothing to do with side hustles or how to optimize your budget. But the ramifications of this news story can't be understated.
China has been experiencing massive upheavals over Covid restrictions since some tragic events on Thanksgiving Day. These protests and clashes with authorities happen to be in one of the heaviest manufacturing districts in the nation, as well. Thought those supply-chain disruptions were over? Between the civil unrest and the continued lockdowns, you might want to think again...
30+ Best Christmas Side Hustles
Ahh, Christmas, the most wonderful time of the year. Want to make some extra cash for the Holidays? This is a nifty article outlining some classic, as well as original, ideas to generate some extra income to pay for all those gifts on your list.
Check it out.
Idea of the Week - Christmas Light Installation
Speaking of the the spirit of Christmas, why not take advantage of the holiday cheer and run a two-week operation of installing Christmas lights for your neighbors?
I follow a guy on Twitter who runs a number of service businesses, including pressure washing, window cleaning, and now: Christmas light installation. He pulls in $1,500 a job and just started a few weeks ago on this. He put together a no-nonsense eBook on the process that you can download for free to learn about the inventory needed, marketing, pricing, and other general tips. It's not to late to start even this Holiday season.
If getting on roofs isn't your style, I am still confident that shooting a follow to @jmventurelog will be worth your while. It got my creative juices flowing on other businesses to start and I'm sure it will for you too.
Podcast of the Week - My First Million
This episode was from two weeks ago, but was good enough to go back and listen to twice. The hosts have on entreprenuer Andrew Wilkinson, and have a wide-ranging but honest discussion about the types of businesses that are hardest, and easiest, to start. Coming from three highly successful founders, I found the content extremely influential and as always, highly entertaining.
Give it a listen.
